Skilled Workforce for Microelectronics: Microtec Academy

More Chips “Made in Europe”! This is the European Union’s declared objective, by doubling the share of semiconductors produced in Europe from 10 % to 20 % by 2030. Activitites aim at strengthening Europe's technological resilience and increase global competitiveness in the semiconductor industry. Thus, semiconductor production is being reinforced through the European Chips Act, with FBH contributing to the newly launched APECS pilot line as part of the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD).

Achieving these goals also requires a well-trained workforce. The Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has therefore launched the nationwide flagship project skills4chips in November 2024, providing €12 million in funding over four years.  By establishing the "Microtec Academy" (only in German language), the project team is building a national training academy for microelectronics and microsystems technology. This academy responds to the challenges of the growing demand for skilled professionals and the resulting changes in the job market with innovative training concepts.

skills4chips is coordinated by the Advanced Training Network (ANH Berlin), based at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut. The ANH team brings years of expertise in high-tech training and education, along with an established nationwide network of key stakeholders.
