Skilled Workforce for Microelectronics: National Flagship Project – skills4chips
More Chips “Made in Europe”! This is the European Union’s declared objective: to double the share of semiconductors produced in Europe from 10 % to 20 % by 2030. Achieving this goal not only requires expanding manufacturing capacities but also a well-trained workforce. To address this, Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched the nationwide flagship project skills4chips in November 2024, providing €12 million in funding over four years. At the same time, semiconductor production is being intensified through the European Chips Act, with FBH contributing to the newly launched APECS pilot line as part of the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany.
skills4chips is coordinated by the Advanced Training Network (ANH Berlin), based at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut. The ANH team brings years of expertise in high-tech training and education, along with an established nationwide network of key stakeholders. By establishing the "Microtec Academy" (only in German language), the team is building a national training academy for microelectronics and microsystems technology. This academy aims to respond to the challenges of the growing demand for skilled professionals and the resulting changes in the job market with innovative training concepts.
